According to The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton have now opened talks over an exchange involving Kyle Walker-Peters and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
It’s claimed that there is now real confidence from all sides of this potential deal that a n agreement will be reached.
Jose Mourinho has allegedly identified Hojbjerg as the holding midfielder he really needs to add balance to the Tottenham midfield.
He seemingly believes that using Hojbjerg as an anchor man will help free up Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso in a 4-3-3.
Southampton had wanted £35million for Hojbjerg, but that has come down to £25million; after all, he is out of contract in a year’s time and has been stripped of the captaincy.
That’s more palatable for Spurs, but they are trying to bring the fee down even further by including current Saints loanee Walker-Peters in the deal.
The right back has impressed in recent games, and with the Englishman showing promise whilst Southampton are picking up points without Hojbjerg in the side, they seem open to an exchange.
Spurs will likely still have to cough up around £10million to £15million even with Walker-Peters included, but the Dane is what Tottenham need.
He’s strong and determined, doesn’t shy away from the dirty work in midfield, has been a leader as Southampton captain and had a great schooling at Bayern Munich.
Hojbjerg is just 24 too, meaning there is plenty of room to grow. With confidence a deal will be done, it seems that Walker-Peters’ time at Tottenham is coming to an end, despite his strong form and Tottenham’s issues at right back.
It may well be that Spurs feel they can find another right back elsewhere and that Walker-Peters is the key to landing top target Hojbjerg, with more work to do for Mourinho and co.
