Italian outlet Calcio Mercato report that Tottenham have been watching Lecce captain Morten Hjulmand and have made the trip to scout him ‘several times’ over the past few months – with a fee of just £13m required to sign the Dane.

The 23-year-old midfielder is earning rave reviews for his performances from the middle of the park this season. He helped Lecce gain promotion to Serie A last season, and has since featured in 24 of Lecce’s 26 Serie A games this term.

However, Hjulmand’s long-term future is in doubt. Like Harry Kane and a handful of other Tottenham players, he has entered the final 18 months of his deal. Rudy Galetti said in January that Leeds, Forest and Southampton were keen.

Now, CM report that Tottenham and Dortmund have been watching Hjulmand – who is yet to win his first senior cap with Denmark – over the past few months on several occasions. Jose Mourinho’s Roma are also interested in him.

Tottenham watch Hjulmand ‘several times’ with just £13m required

Hjulmand is the kind of player that comes along now and then, that is an unearthed diamond. In Serie A, he is turning out the kind of form expected of a player that has been playing at the top level for years. This is his first Serie A season.

Lecce are not awash with cash and Hjulmand is not going to sign a new deal. He, and Lecce, will know he has already outgrown them. So, he will be on the move this summer. Is Spurs too big a step up? Maybe. But, he will get a move.

Perhaps, Spurs should move against the grain and instead of watching a Leeds or a Southampton sign him first before he joins a club like Tottenham – cut out the middle man. Save themselves some cash, and bring in the Danish star.
