Tottenham have reportedly lined up four transfer targets from Premier League clubs.
Leicester City’s Demarai Gray celebrates scoring
According to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham’s ‘football committee’ are seeking ‘young players with potential and Premier League experience’ ahead of the summer transfer window.
Spurs had mixed fortunes last summer’s transfer window, as whilst Victor Wanyama has been a mainstay of the Tottenham side, the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen have yet to really make an impact.
With Champions League qualification again looking likely, Tottenham will be hoping to make better additions this summer, with a plan seemingly in place already despite the absence of a Head of Recruitment following Paul Mitchell’s exit.
The London Evening Standard report that Tottenham’s ‘football committee’ – consisting of Daniel Levy, Mauricio Pochettino and John McDermott – have set a signing policy, with Spurs focusing on signing young players with potential, as well as Premier League experience.
With that in mind, four top targets are named in the report, with Spurs allegedly focusing on Everton’s Ross Barkley, Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, Leicester City’s Demarai Gray and Burnley’s Andre Gray.
All four players are impressive Premier League players, and whilst some believe that Tottenham need a big-money, marquee signing such as Isco or Alexandre Lacazette, these are more sensible targets with a clear strategy from Tottenham.
Burnley’s Andre Gray
Having seen Janssen struggle in making the transition from Dutch football to the Premier League, bringing in players who have already shown that they can play in the Premier League is a smart approach from Spurs before even analysing the qualities of those players.
Barkley would bring a drive to the Spurs midfield that they lack when Mousa Dembele is missing, whilst he has already played with the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane with the England national team, and has only scratched the surface of his potential.
Zaha’s pace would make him a valuable addition to a Spurs that have been accused of being too one-paced at times, with Leicester winger Gray offering a budget option should Tottenham fail to tempt Palace into selling the Ivorian star.
Finally, Burnley forward Gray has hit eight Premier League goals this season in a mostly defensive Clarets side, with his pace a welcome change-up from Kane and Janssen should Spurs manage to sign him this summer, when he has just one year left on his contract at Turf Moor.
The quartet may not be blockbuster additions, but they make sense in terms of how Tottenham are building and what they need to add, with Pochettino more likely to add players of this calibre that he can mould into stars, rather than buying existing big-names.
