Report: Spurs fear Jan Vertonghen could be out until mid-December

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly fearful that Jan Vertonghen could miss the rest of the Champions League group-stages.

Tottenham are fearful that Jan Vertonghen’s hamstring injury that he sustained last month could actually keep the Belgian sidelined until mid-December and rule him out of the rest of the Champions League group-stages, according to a report from the Daily Mirror.

Vertonghen was reportedly set to be sidelined for around four to six weeks following the problem that saw him replaced at half-time during their victory over Huddersfield Town, but the report suggests that Spurs are now concerned that he could be absent for longer.

The Mirror reports that Vertonghen will continue to be assessed this week, but Tottenham are starting to worry that he may not be back until after they have faced Barcelona in the Nou Camp in December.

Should Vertonghen make his comeback in the Burnley clash immediately following the trip to Spain, he will miss a further 13 games as well as the two fixtures that he has already been sidelined for, so Spurs will undoubtedly hope that this week’s scans offer a much more positive prognosis.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men kept a clean sheet at the weekend, but not having Vertonghen in their ranks is a major blow given the consistency that he brings to the side.

And with Spurs having something of a mountain to climb to ensure that December’s game against the Catalan side is not their last in this season’s Champions League, not having Vertonghen is a setback that they could have certainly done without.
