According to Calcio Mercato, Tottenham have made an enquiry about signing Schalke ace Leon Goretzka, challenging Juventus for his signature.

Spurs 3-4-2-1 system has seen Eric Dier drop back to play as a defender, leaving Mauricio Pochettino with Victor Wanyama, Mousa Dembele and Harry Winks as his midfield options.

Adding another central midfielder could be a priority for the Spurs boss this summer as a result, and a German star is being linked with a move to White Hart Lane.

Calcio Mercato claim that Tottenham have made an enquiry about signing Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka with a view to a summer pursuit of the player given that he’s entering the final year of his contract.

Goretzka, 22, joined Schalke from VfL Bochum in 2013, and he has racked up more than 100 appearances for the Gelsenkirchen side, becoming a regular at the Veltins Arena.

A German international with three caps to his name, Goretzka is the total package as a box-to-box midfielder, with great size, strength and technical ability, whilst he’s shown he can find the net with six goals to his name this season.

Tottenham may now be hoping to land Goretzka having sold fellow midfielder Nabil Bentaleb to Schalke this season, and the links come just months after speculation surrounding a move for Max Meyer.

Bild reported in August that Tottenham were set to make a £38million bid for playmaker Meyer, but no deal materialised, and Meyer has hit just two goals and one assist this season.

Right now, Goretzka is a more sensible target for Spurs, as he can challenge for a starting spot in the centre of Pochettino’s midfield, whilst finding a role for the out-of-form Meyer could be more difficult.

Goretzka should also come cheaper than the £38million suggested for Meyer, and if Spurs can fend off Juventus for his signature this summer, then he could be a smart addition for Pochettino.
