According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur looked into signing Brentford goalkeeper David Raya before going for Joe Hart.

It’s claimed that Tottenham watched Raya closely as they considered a move to bring him from West London to North London.

In the end, Spurs went for free agent Joe Hart instead, with their interest over – for now at least.

Raya is just 24, and with both Hart and Hugo Lloris into their 30’s now, the Spaniard should remain on the Tottenham radar as a long-term target.

Raya didn’t particularly cover himself in glory in the Championship playoff final, but he has been a superb goalkeeper for Brentford and capable of playing the ball out from the back.

That isn’t exactly Jose Mourinho’s style, so maybe Raya would make more sense for a future Tottenham manager who builds through defence.

Just because Raya isn’t heading to Tottenham, it doesn’t mean that he won’t still end up in North London this summer.

The report notes that Arsenal are keen too, and could move for him if they end up selling Emiliano Martinez; Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana worked with Raya at Brentford.

Brentford don’t want to sell Raya this summer, which could be a problem, but Arsenal may be well-placed to pounce for the former Blackburn Rovers man after Tottenham went with Hart instead.
