Tottenham Hotspur are being linked with Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong once again.
According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur have renewed hope in the battle for Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong – but only if Christian Eriksen goes.
Spurs have concerns about the future of Danish playmaker Eriksen, given that his contract expires next summer and he is bound to be a wanted man around Europe.
If Tottenham sell Eriksen, a top midfielder will be wanted in his place, and The Mirror believe Spurs could go back to Eriksen’s former club Ajax for a signing.
It’s claimed that Spurs have told Frenkie de Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, that they will match the current highest bid for the midfielder in an attempt to lure him to North London.
It’s even added that, whilst Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were favourites with their spending power, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been working on a strong relationship with Ajax director of football Mark Overmars, giving Spurs new hope of a deal.
That would certainly be a bold move from Spurs, as 21-year-old De Jong is one of the most in-demand midfielders around, and pipping major clubs to his signature would be a real statement of intent.
Yet there would surely be questions over De Jong’s suitability; a talented midfielder, yes, but he is more of a deep-lying playmaker rather than an attack-minded midfielder in the Eriksen mould.
A re-think in midfield could take place, or simply allow De Jong to be the orchestrator in midfield, with Son Heung-min, Dele Alli on another new signing behind Harry Kane.
