Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an ambitious bid for Philippe Coutinho.
According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur have launched a stunning loan bid for Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho – which would cost a huge £21million.
Spurs are in the market for another playmaker given that Christian Eriksen’s future seems to lie elsewhere, and a host of names have been linked.
Bruno Fernandes and Giovani Lo Celso are the prime targets, but there is suddenly a major interest in signing Barcelona star Coutinho before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
It’s claimed that Spurs have now launched a loan bid for Coutinho, and Barcelona are demanding a staggering £21million fee to loan him out.
The Brazilian ace has a prior relationship with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino having worked together at Espanyol in 2012, and The Telegraph even noted that Pochettino attempted to bring him to Southampton before having the move hijacked by Liverpool.
That may well appeal to Coutinho, who simply hasn’t lived up to expectations since joining the club for £142million (Guardian) from Liverpool in January 2018.
The 27-year-old notched just five goals and two assists in La Liga last season, and with Antoine Griezmann signed, Barcelona may look to move him out – even on loan – this summer.
Coutinho would be a remarkable signing for Spurs before the deadline, bringing a real spark of flair to Pochettino’s side, but whether Daniel Levy would pay £21million for a loan fee – and £200,000-a-week in wages – remains to be seen.
