Well, Tottenham Hotspur could genuinely be signing a midfielder in January.
Speculation has been mounting for months that Tottenham were interested in taking AC Milan star Franck Kessie to North London.
In fact, Italian journalist Rudy Galleti revealed to Calciomercato’s Twitch feed in November that Spurs manager Antonio Conte has specifically asked for the Ivory Coast international.
Things are progressing it would seem because the same publication has now reported that the Lilywhites are winning the race to sign the 24-year-old – who cost Milan £23 million in 2017 – and are even ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, managed by Mauricio Pochettino.
Mixed development
It’s good and bad news that Tottenham are reportedly leading PSG and others for Kessie.
It’s a positive development because it indicates that the North Londoners are most desperate to get him and, if true, word will get back to a no-doubt appreciative Kessie.
However, this is a player who’s out of contract at San Siro next summer.
Success could hinge on personal terms and, well, the big-spending French giants – who have been ‘pressing for months‘ to sign him – can blow Tottenham out of the water when it comes to salary and signing-on bonuses.
Even though Milan can’t demand a huge transfer fee if he goes in January, Pochettino would still the advantage on this front.
There’s a sense that although Spurs are winning the race, Pochettino and PSG have the resources and power to change that anytime that they please.
