Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion are being linked with William Carvalho.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola report that Tottenham Hotspur are willing to offer €30million (£22million) for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

Carvalho, 25, has long been touted as one of the top defensive midfielders in Europe, and he has regularly been linked with a move to the Premier League as a result.

Now, A Bola claim that West Bromwich Albion are still keen having offered €20million (£17.8million) for Carvalho, but that isn’t quite enough to convince Sporting to sell their star midfielder.

It’s added that Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are all willing to offer around €30million (£22million) for Carvalho, which may be a little closer to what Sporting would want.

Spurs have been quiet in the transfer market this summer, and whilst a new midfielder could be on Mauricio Pochettino’s wish list, it would be a surprise to see them move for Carvalho.

A strong, powerful midfielder who sits in front of the back four, Carvalho is a very similar player to current Tottenham star Victor Wanyama, and Eric Dier can play in a holding role as cover if needed.

If Spurs are to make a move for a midfielder this summer, it’s more likely to be a player who can replicate Mousa Dembele’s drive and quality on the ball, rather than another Wanyama-like player to protect the back four.

The fact that four clubs are linked with a move makes the rumour somewhat dubious anyway, but whilst Spurs may not be the ideal destination for the Portuguese powerhouse, this could actually be the summer where Carvalho finally makes his move to the Premier League.
