Dundee United are trying to stop Rangers from using St. Andrews’ University as a pre-season training camp, according to a report, amid fears of ‘security’ if the Gers head to the Fife town.

According to the Daily Record, the Tannadice side are unhappy at the prospect of the Scottish champions using the facilities at St. Andrews after their plans for a pre-season trip to Portugal were derailed.

The University’s facilities are one option the Light Blues are looking at as a replacement with possibilities to head to England also on the table – however, the report claims that due to the rivalry between the clubs there is a fear that fans can easily access the training camp.

With United having a long-term agreement to use the University as a training base, they don’t want Steven Gerrard’s side going through their own preparations for the season on a neighbouring pitch.

The Croatian national team were due to be based there for Euro 2020 before Covid restrictions threw a spanner in the works, while West Ham United and Leicester are also said to be training there this summer.

Gerrard’s side were reportedly due to face Danish Superliga side SønderjyskE in July before returning to Scotland to step-up their preparations but that now looks to be a non-starter.

The Light Blues are also reported to be facing Tranmere, Partick Thistle, Arsenal, Blackpool and Brighton this summer as they gear up for the defence of their Scottish Premiership crown.
