As Djed Spence signed for Tottenham Hotspur for £20 million in the summer, it seemed like a match made in heaven.
With the former Middlesborough starlet bringing bags of skill and pace as a right wing-back during his loan stint at Nottingham Forest, he seemed like the perfect fit in an Antonio Conte side.
After all, wing-backs remain instrumental in the Italian boss’s system, which could have potentially made the Englishman his most essential addition.
However, things could not have panned out any more differently in reality, as Spence has played a mere one minute of football this season.

Despite Emerson Royal failing to exhibit his class in a Spurs shirt in his second season at the club, the ex-Inter Milan manager has preferred him over handing the 21-year-old a chance to prove his worth.
Recently, HITC had even relayed Conte’s admission to Football London that the youngster needs to ‘improve’ before he gets a chance in the side.
Upon Spence’s arrival as well, the Tottenham boss had stated that he was not his personal choice, and an instead an investment made the club, as relayed by talkSPORT.
As Djed Spence remains on the fringes of things at Spurs, the Athletic have reported that he is not frustrated about his lack of playing time this season.
Instead, the gifted defender acknowledges that he has room for improvement to be able to perform up to the side’s standards and is willing to work in order to up his game.
Furthermore, the ex-Forest man is reportedly content with working alongside a number of top players and Antonio Conte believes that the right wing-back will improve as time passes.
Ultimately, Djed Spence will have to remain patient and pounce at any chance he is given to prove his mettle.
