According to Portuguese outlet Record, Valencia have turned their attention to Benfica’s Julian Weigl after failing to convince Rangers-linked Jack Wilshere to join them.

The La Liga side’s troubles forced them to sell a number of their key players in the summer. As many as eight players left Valencia including stars like Rodrigo, Ferran Torres, Francis Coquelin and Geoffrey Kondogbia.

The latter was snapped up by Atletico Madrid earlier this month as a replacement for Thomas Partey, who they lost on transfer deadline day to Premier League side Arsenal.

Valencia now need a replacement for Kondogbia and Wilshere was viewed as a possible option. However, the report claims that they have given up on the Englishman as he is determined to join Scottish giants Rangers.

Steven Gerrard’s side have been heavily linked with a move for the former Arsenal man (talkSPORT). Wilshere is a free agent after agreeing to terminate his contract at West Ham earlier in the summer.

The Gers have plenty of options in the middle of the park, but a player of Wilshere’s quality might just to be too difficult to turn down. Gerrard knows his compatriot’s quality first-hand, having played with and against him back in the day.

Rangers are nine points clear at the top of the table. Celtic have dominated the league for years now, and Gers supporters will give anything to put an end to that.

Wilshere would give them a huge boost in their pursuit of the title. If the report is to be believed, he is determined to join them, and all that’s left is a green light from Gerrard and the board.
