Throughout Brighton & Hove Albion’s spell in the Premier League, one player that is rarely ever given his due credit is Adam Webster.

While Lewis Dunk has always rightly been eyed as the side’s leader, Ben White earned a whopping £50 million move to Arsenal last summer, while the 27-year old quietly went about his business.

However, the dependable centre-back has started to gain plaudits since last term for his excellent displays for the Seagulls.

So much so that it has now been reported by Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard that Gareth Southgate has selected Adam Webster as a part of England’s 55-man preliminary squad list ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

It has been stated that said list will not be publicly announced to ensure players are always on their toes, as well as to fulfil certain administrative duties such as applying for visas.

However, it is believed that alongside fellow Brighton players such as Lewis Dunk and Danny Welbeck, Adam Webster is a part of the list of players that will be considered as potential squad players ahead of the showpiece event.

Ultimately, it makes complete sense why the ex-Ipswich Town defender has been selected by Southgate, considering his wealth of experience in terms of operating in a back three.

With the Three Lions boss using a 3-4-3 system in a majority of the side’s Nations League fixtures, it is likely that the same setup will largely be seen in Qatar as well.

While Pep Guardiola recently confirmed that Kyle Walker, who operates as the right-sided centre-half in this system is likely to be fit for the tournament, there is no knowing whether he will be in optimum condition to start, following just recovering from a groin surgery.

With Adam Webster consistently deployed in the same position as the Manchester City star, while also being one of the nation’s most in-form defenders, his reported selection is an astute decision from Gareth Southgate.
