Southampton and Newcastle United are among the clubs credited with interest in the player who West Bromwich Albion are said to have bid for last summer.
Southampton will join Newcastle United in the hunt for Marseille midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, according to the Daily Mirror [February 27th, page 49].
Newcastle are among several Premier League clubs credited with interest in Anguissa, along with Watford, West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion – and it is claimed the latter club offered €15 million [£13.25 million] for the 22-year-old last summer [La Provence].
Perhaps unsurprisingly, however – considering Anguissa has emerged as a key member of the Marseille team over the past two seasons, and is on a long-term contract until 2021 – that offer is said to have been rejected.
Nevertheless, the Daily Mirror’s report mentions only Newcastle and Southampton, whose ‘interest’ appears to be fresh.
Champions League or Championship…
It remains to be seen whether Marseille would sanction Anguissa’s departure, especially with the French side well on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Should the Cameroonian head to England, however, his destination could be determined by which of his alleged suitors remain in the Premier League.
West Ham, Newcastle and Southampton are all within reach of the relegation places, with West Brom cut adrift at the bottom. Watford, meanwhile, are 10th in the standings – six points clear of danger.
