According to reports from The Times, Manchester City are leading the race to sign Ryan Bertrand from Southampton.
Benjamin Mendy is City’s first choice target, but his reported £40 million price tag is proving a big obstacle. City are mulling whether to pay such a hefty figure and have turned their attention to Bertrand instead.
The former Chelsea defender has reportedly [The Mirror] informed the Southampton hierarchy that he wants to leave the club.

The Times claim that Southampton will demand at least double the £10 million fee they paid to sign the defender from Chelsea in 2015.
Premier League rivals Liverpool are also interested in Bertrand, and could make a move for him, according to The Sun.
Liverpool need a solid left-back this summer, and should act quickly if they are serious about Bertrand.

James Milner, primarily a midfielder, has been used at left-back while Jurgen Klopp is not convinced with Alberto Moreno.
Bertrand has developed into a solid defender since his move from Chelsea. He is solid in defence and poses threat going forward as well. He would be a fantastic addition to the Reds’s squad.
However, given how Southampton reacted to Liverpool’s move for Virgil van Dijk, doubts remain whether the Saints would be willing to entertain any offer for Bertrand from the Reds this summer.
