The Middlesbrough player could cost Southampton a club-record £30 million fee.

Southampton are set to ‘step up their pursuit’ of Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson in the wake of Virgil van Dijk’s transfer request, The Sun reports.

It is claimed that Southampton see Gibson as the perfect replacement for the Dutchman, after he impressed despite Middlesbrough’s relegation in his maiden Premier League campaign.

Middlesbrough, whose long-time owner Steve Gibson is the player’s uncle, are said to be reluctant to lose him, amid interest from a string of top flight clubs.

But according to The Sun, they could be persuaded to sell Gibson for a bid of £30 million.

It is claimed that Southampton ‘believe they can lure him’ with the prospect of playing regularly in the Premier League ahead of next summer’s World Cup, after the 24-year-old won his first England call up in March.

Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk has left the number five shirt free this season, which according to The Sun suggests he is already looking at bringing in a replacement.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are listed as possible destinations for Van Dijk, who is said to be valued at £50 million by Southampton.
