Southampton reportedly plan to make a fresh move for the forward in the summer, but Everton are also monitoring the situation.
Southampton plan to make another move for Jean-Kevin Augustin in the summer after failing to land the forward during the January transfer window, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Augustin has not enjoyed the best season with RB Leipzig. The 21-year-old has scored just three goals in the Bundesliga. But he has scored twice in the Europa League, and his underwhelming record did not appear to put a number of Premier League sides off making a move last month.
The Daily Mail reports that the Saints, West Ham and Everton made deadline day moves for the youngster, and Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men now have their eye on a fresh pursuit for the end of the season.
The Mail adds that Leipzig will demand £35 million for Augustin, with the Toffees also closely monitoring his situation.
It would be a huge gamble for Southampton to go anywhere near his asking price. His potential means that the deal could prove to be a masterstroke, but there is arguably no guarantee that it will prove to be money well spent.
Unfortunately, the Saints do not have a fantastic record when it comes to spending big money. The likes of Guido Carrillo, Sofiane Boufal and Dani Osvaldo have been major disappointments in recent years.
But with the best of season of Augustin’s career to date coming during his time working under Hasenhuttl, perhaps the Southampton boss feels that he could be the kind of player who restores the fans’ faith in the club’s recruitment policy when it comes to going after the big-money deals.
