Southampton plan to ask Huddersfield Town about a potential summer move for Aaron Mooy as the two sides meet on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (12/5; page 59).
It has been a miserable season for the Terriers, who will be looking for only their fourth league win of the campaign when they come up against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side at St Mary’s.
The 28-year-old has been one of their better performers throughout the year, scoring three times. And it appears that he may not be heading to the Championship with the rest of his teammates.
The Sun on Sunday (12/5; page 59) reports that the Saints are admirers of the Australian and plan to ask about what price they need to pay to take him to the south coast. It is noted that Huddersfield value Mooy at around £15 million.
Southampton have made a big improvement under Hasenhuttl, and there is really a sense that the Austrian is the right man to take them back up the table after Mark Hughes threatened to take the club further down the relegation-bound path that Mauricio Pellegrino found his way onto.
Their midfield has been a key reason for their success under Hasenhuttl, so it may be a surprise to some that Southampton are targeting Mooy when other areas of the squad arguably require greater attention.
But if Hasenhuttl has the funds to make a number of signings, then Mooy could be an incredibly shrewd addition as he has often stood out in a Huddersfield side that has had so little to smile about throughout the season.
