Jeremi Rodriguez has flown to England to seal a £400,000 move from Las Palmas to Southampton, according to The Sun (26 July, page 63).

While many a Premier League club have been forced to water down their transfer plans in light of an ongoing financial crisis, it seems that not much has changed at St Mary’s.

The Saints have had their fingers burned time and again during a series of disastrous big-money signings.

And, with the struggles of Wesley Hoedt, Moi Elyounoussi and Guido Carrillo still fresh in the mind, the South Coast club appear to have returned to their roots.

Essentially, by prioritising young, uncut gems rather than the expensive and the established.

Mohammed Salisu, a 20-year-old centre-half who only made his professional debut last August, is expected to join in a £10 million move from Real Valladolid.

And, according to The Sun, another fresh-faced starlet is heading to Southampton from Spain.

Left-back Rodriguez has travelled to England with the Saints set to pay a bargain £400,000 for a teenager who’s contract at second-tier side Las Palmas has run down.

This comes a matter of months after another Las Palmas wonderkid Pedri, a balletic young playmaker who has been compared to Andres Iniesta, sealed a life-changing switch to Barcelona.

And in Hasenhuttl, Rodriguez will have a coach who has no qualms about throwing untested youngsters in at the deep end – as Michael Obafemi, Will Smallbone, Yan Valery and co will attest.
