Southampton remain in pursuit of Jan Bednarek despite seeing an offer turned down for the Polish defender, the Mirror reports [15 June, page 62].

A new centre-half is likely to feature highly on the Saints’ summer shopping list, with Martin Caceres departing on a free transfer and Virgil van Dijk still expected to move on despite Liverpool withdrawing their interest.

And, according to the Mirror, Southampton are still bidding for Bednarek, for whom they have already offered more than £5 million.

The 21-year-old, who currently plays for Lech Poznan in his homeland, is also said to have interest from Bundesliga side Hannover, however Southampton’s greater financial might could give them the upper hand.

Although not mentioned in the report, the Saints’ sacking of Claude Puel is unlikely to affect their pursuit of Bednarek, with the Frenchman’s departure long anticipated.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel is an early frontrunner to succeed Puel at St Mary’s, according to bookmakers Sky Bet.
