Erik Sviatchenko’s future at Celtic appears to be in doubt and Southampton are keen on handing him the chance to move to the Premier League.

Eric Sviatchenko of Celtic celebrates as Celtic win the Betfred Cup Final between Aberdeen FC and Celtic FC at Hampden Park on November 27, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Southampton have sounded out Erik Sviatchenko about a potential move in January as the Dane’s future looks set to lie away from Celtic.

Sviatchenko has barely featured for the Hoops this season, and the Daily Record reports that Marvin Compper’s arrival from RB Leipzig is likely to leave the path clear for the 26-year-old to leave Parkhead after two years in the Scottish Premiership.

Southampton meanwhile, are looking to bolster their own options at the back and have a significant amount of money with which to do it, having sold Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool for a world record sum of £75 million, as reported by the Telegraph.

The Record reports that the Saints – who were linked with Sviatchenko by The Sun during the previous January transfer windoware considering a potential move for the centre-back this month, though they may have to compete with Copenhagen, who are preparing a £1.5 million bid.

The Saints have had plenty of luck when they have signed players from the Hoops in recent years. Victor Wanyama was exceptional during his time on the south coast, while Fraser Forster has also been an excellent signing despite his underwhelming form over the last few months, and of course, van Dijk made the switch from Parkhead and has gone to establish himself as the most expensive defender in history.

Of course, expecting Sviatchenko to be the next van Dijk would be a mistake, but given that he would seemingly cost such an incredibly small percentage of the money that they made from selling the Dutchman, it may prove to be a very shrewd piece of business from the Saints.
