Southampton look set to see off competition from Manchester United in the race to sign Dundee United prospect Kieran Freeman, according to The Scottish Sun.
The 16-year-old has been attracting plenty of attention from the Premier League. But despite The Scottish Sun reporting that he has been given the same sort of opportunities that were handed to Darren Fletcher when the Red Devils hoped to land him as a youngster, it appears that it is the Saints that are now on the verge of completing a deal.
The Scottish Sun adds that the south coast club have agreed a five-figure sum with the Scottish Championship side, with the overall figure set to rise due to add-ons that are part of the deal.
Though Southampton are without a manager currently, they not only have one of the best records for giving young players chances in the first-team, but they also have an excellent recent track record of signing players from Scotland and taking them to the next level.
The likes of Fraser Forster, Victor Wanyama and Virgil Van Dijk all completed the switch from Celtic, and arguably enhanced their reputations during their respective spells at St Mary’s.
And while it may be a while before Freeman is contending for a place in the first-team if a deal does go through, he can surely have plenty of confidence that he stands a great chance of becoming the player that Southampton hope he can be due to the infrastructure at the club.
