Aston Villa are said to face a battle to sign the Southampton left back.

Aston Villa are struggling to get Matt Targett out of Southampton on loan, the Daily Mirror reports in its live blog on Tuesday (15:29).
The newspaper claims Saints are so far resisting Villa’s attempts to lend Targett until the January transfer window, in spite of the left-back’s desire to play regular football this season.
The 22-year-old is currently behind Ryan Bertrand in Southampton’s pecking order, and was denied a permanent return to Fulham after a successful spell at Craven Cottage last term.
Having had a £15 million offer rejected, according to the Daily Mirror, Fulham instead turned to Joe Bryan to fill their own shortage in Targett’s position – ironically signing him from under the noses of Aston Villa.

And the Villans now have until 5pm on Friday to convince Southampton to part with the former England Under-21 international, at which point the window for loans and free transfers will close until January.
Middlesbrough were previously credited with interest in Targett, but are not mentioned in the Daily Mirror’s latest report.
