Southampton are reportedly in talks to sign Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto.

According to Sky Sports, Southampton have opened talks with Atletico Madrid about a deal to sign striker Luciano Vietto this summer.

The Saints have been quiet during this summer’s transfer window, which is no huge surprise given that they replaced manager Claude Puel with Mauricio Pellegrino last month.

The Argentinian will now be looking for new signings ahead of the Premier League season, and he looks to be using his knowledge of Argentinian stars and Spanish football with a new move.

Sky Sports report that Southampton want to sign Atletico Madrid striker Luciano Vietto, and have now opened talks over a possible deal to sign him.

Vietto, 23, became one of the stars of Argentinian football with Racing Club de Avellaneda, earning a 2014 move to Villarreal – and with 20 goals in 48 games, he moved on to Atletico just a year later.

Vietto struggled with Atleti, scoring just three times in 28 games, before notching ten goals in 31 games during a loan spell with Sevilla last season.

Now back with Atletico but unlikely to feature under Diego Simeone, Vietto could be on the move this summer, and Southampton boss Pellegrino – who managed Alaves last season – is looking to lure him to England.

Southampton do have Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long, but with question marks over Long’s future and a poor end to the season for Gabbiadini, Vietto could arrive as another striking option for the Saints.
