The Saints are reportedly hoping to sign Djenepo, a versatile 20-year-old attacker who plays for Standard Liege and the Mali national team.
Southampton will have to contend with competition from Serie A side AC Milan for the signature of versatile attacker Moussa Djenepo, according to a report from Italy.
TuttoMercatoWeb had reported earlier in the week that the Standard Liege ace was closing in on a switch to the Saints, who were looking to pay around £19.4million for the 20-year-old.
However, Sport Mediaset has listed Djenepo as one of 10 players that the Rossoneri are keeping tabs on, and interestingly, the fee mentioned for him is 8 million Euro (around £7million).
The Mediaset report also says Milan ‘should not wait too long’ to make a move, alluding to interest from rival suitors, though the Premier League south coast club is not explicitly mentioned.
Djenepo, a Mali international, scored eight goals in 32 league appearances this past season for the Belgian club, mostly featuring on the left wing, though he can also play on the other flank, up front or behind the striker.
Southampton have come in leaps and bounds since the arrival of Ralph Hasenhuttl at the end of last year and, going into his first full season, the Austrian will be seeking to put together a squad aiming much higher than the relegation battles of the past two campaigns.
Meanwhile, Milan are one of Italy’s most successful and historic clubs, not to mention one of the most famous teams in the world, but they have endured a difficult few years in which a top-four finish has eluded them since 2012-13, so they will be desperate to rebuild in order to once again sit at the top table.
