Current Southampton boss Claude Puel looks like he may leave St Mary’s Stadium, and is allegedly in line for the Saint-Etienne position.

Southampton’s managerial situation is arguably the most interesting developing story in the country right now, and it’s cranked up yet another gear following news that former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel is now in pole position for the job, as reported by L’Equipe du Soir TV, but covered by the Daily Express.

The 43-year-old German has just won the DFP-Pokal with Dortmund, beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in the final, but to the surprise of everyone, he resigned mere days after that success, leaving the German giants looking for a new manager.

And it could be that Tuchel is first in line for the Southampton job, which seems likely to become available one way or the other in the not too distant future. A large section of the Saints’ fanbase are against current boss Claude Puel, despite the club finishing eighth and reaching the League Cup final.

Southampton fans are aggravated at the negative style of play Puel has introduced recently, which has been typified by the fact that Charlie Austin – who was injured for five months of the season – still finished top scorer at St Mary’s with nine in all competitions.

It was looking ominous for Puel in regards to whether he’d get the sack or not, especially as Saints haven’t scored a home goal for more than six hours of football, but it recently emerged that Saint-Etienne are interested in taking Puel to France, as reported by The Sun.

In any case, it wouldn’t be a stretch to see Southampton with a new man in the dugout for the new season, and Tuchel would represent an unbelievable coup considering the German’s pedigree.
