Southampton are reportedly interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Rode this summer.
According to a report from German outlet Sport1, Southampton are weighing up a move for Sebastian Rode, with Borussia Dortmund ready to cash in on the midfielder this summer.
The Saints are looking for their second signing of the window, with Ralph Hasenhuttl already adding Moussa Djenepo to his ranks during the early stages of the summer.
And it appears that Rode may be a player on the Austrian’s radar. Sport1 reports that the Saints’ director of football Ross Wilson is keen on the 28-year-old and has made an enquiry for the former Bayern Munich man, who spent the second-half of last season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt.
The report notes that Dortmund want to sell Rode as he approaches the final year of his deal at Westfalenstadion, and only want a fee just under £4.5 million – though it is suggested that Frankfurt are the current favourites to take him next season.
A gamble for Southampton?
It is arguably in the middle of the park where the Saints currently boast the most quality and depth, so it is a surprise that Rode is reportedly on the club’s radar, especially as he has not made a league appearance for Dortmund since the 2016/17 campaign.
Rode has endured a nightmare spell with injuries. And just as he appeared to have put his problems behind him, he suffered another injury in the Europa League tie with Chelsea that brought a premature end to his season.
But it was not too long ago that Rode made over 50 appearances in all competitions for Bayern during a two-year spell with the Bavarian giants, so perhaps Hasenhuttl believes that it could be worth the gamble given his asking price.
