Southampton have failed with a move for Joakim Maehle.

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton have turned their attention to Olympiakos ace Omar Elabdellaoui after failing to sign Genk ace Joakim Maehle.

The Saints have been quiet in terms of incomings this month, and have mostly focused on offloading players from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad instead.

Wesley Hoedt, Cedric Soares, Steven Davis and Manolo Gabbiadini have all left this month, but Hasenhuttl may have an arrival up his sleeve yet.

The Austrian wants a right back having allowed Cedric to join Inter Milan, but the Daily Mail report that a £10.5million bid for Genk’s Joakim Maehle has been rejected.

Maehle, 21, was seemingly Southampton’s top target at right back having impressed in Belgium, but the young Dane won’t be joining up with Jannik Vestergaard and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Instead, it’s claimed that Southampton are in talks about a cheaper deal, targeting a £6million deal for Olympiakos ace Elabdellaoui instead.

The Norwegian international appears to be closing in on a move to the South Coast, returning to English football after prior spells with Manchester City and Hull City.

Their move for Elabdellaoui may also frustrate Celtic, as the Daily Record noted last week that the Bhoys wanted to land Elabdellaoui, but Southampton appear to have swooped in and got their man before the transfer deadline.
