Roberts has excelled at Celtic these past 18 months, but Southampton are reportedly ready to ask Manchester City about a deal for the 20-year-old.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino will ask Pep Guardiola about a season-long loan deal for Patrick Roberts, according to The Sun.

Roberts has spent the last 18 months on loan to Celtic from Manchester City and appears to have left a lasting impression on the Scottish champions, who it is claimed are keen to take the winger on another short-term deal.

But, as the report points out, a move to Southampton could give Roberts a chance to play regularly and prove himself in England’s top flight, where he has made only one substitute appearance since moving to City from Fulham two years ago.

City have already signed Bernardo Silva from Monaco this summer, ensuring that Roberts’ opportunities are no greater now than they were before his spell at Celtic.

But it remains to be seen whether Guardiola will sanction the 20-year-old’s exit as he looks to compete on four fronts this coming campaign.

Celtic have already recruited Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes this summer, but continue to be linked with others in his position, which suggests Brendan Rodgers’ side are seeking Roberts contingencies – with Brighton’s Jamie Murphy being the latest [Sky Sports].

Former Celtic trio Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama have each impressed at Southampton immediately after moving there from Glasgow.
