Southampton are reportedly hoping that their latest bid of £14 million will be enough to tempt Birmingham City to sell their star striker.
According to a report from the Daily Echo, Southampton are prepared to walk away from talks and pursue other targets if Birmingham decide to reject their £14 million bid for Che Adams.
The Echo reports that the Saints have made an eight-figure offer that they believe meet Adams’ value with the club not looking to play hardball over their transfers this summer.
It remains to be seen what the Blues make of the bid. But the Echo suggests that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are more than happy to abandon talks with the Championship club if they demand more for the 22-year-old, who scored 22 goals this past season.
The report adds that other potential targets have been identified, so the Saints are ready to switch their focus elsewhere if they are unsuccessful in their latest attempt to bring Adams to St Mary’s.
Will Southampton’s approach pay off?
Plenty of Southampton fans are hoping that Adams is the man to follow Moussa Djenepo through the door at St Mary’s in the coming weeks. He caused all sorts of problems in the second tier this past year, and looks to be ready to make the step up.
Hasenhuttl’s side does need further fire power up front, and Adams appears to have the potential to be a revelation as early as next season if he does join. So if their latest bid is rejected, perhaps the Saints would be wise to stay at the negotiating table just a little longer.
