According to The Sunday Mirror (page 64, 24/05), Southampton may have to sell a number of players to cope with the global pandemic.
It’s claimed that Southampton are worried about their finances, and that they may have to axe a host of key players in order to raise funds.
They’re allegedly ‘leaking money’, and if they can’t find a buyer, big players could go – including midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and striker Danny Ings.
James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond and Jan Bednarek are also mentioned as potential departures, with interest in all five players.
This could be of interest to Tottenham Hotspur. The Daily Star reported in January that Jose Mourinho wanted Ings to arrive as competition for Harry Kane.
If Ings has to be sold this summer, Spurs may well be interested again. The Englishman has hit 15 goals in 29 games for Southampton this season, and would offer Tottenham another proven goalscorer.
A move likely move would be signing Hojbjerg. Spurs have been linked since January, and The Telegraph recently noted that Spurs do want him, but are waiting to see what their summer budget looks like.
Hojbjerg is a gritty and determined central midfielder, which Mourinho is looking for this summer. Tottenham need to be clever with their money this summer, and trying to benefit from Southampton’s concerns may make sense.
