Southampton are closing in on the appointment of Mark Hughes, according to reports.

The Saints have wasted little time trying to fill the void that Mauricio Pellegrino has left after he was dismissed earlier in the week with the club one place and one point above the bottom three in the Premier League.

It has been a miserable season for Southampton, and it is no surprise that the board have decided to act. While they remain in the FA Cup, and face a quarter-final with Wigan Athletic this weekend, they have managed just one league win since the end of November and were thrashed 3-0 by fellow strugglers Newcastle United last Saturday.
The Mail reports that the deal to bring Hughes in is getting close with the finer details being put together. And Hughes has similarly taken little time to start making plans regarding his backroom team.

While the Saints will undoubtedly want to book their semi-final ticket in the FA Cup this weekend, Hughes will be delighted that he has a good amount of time to work with his squad before they face the absolutely vital clash with West Ham on the final day of the month.
