Southampton are believed to have made a move for the 19-year-old.

According to the Daily Mail, Southampton have bid £1million for Shamrock Rovers teenager Trevor Clarke.

The 19-year-old can operate as a left-back or a left-sided midfielder and Southampton have made their move following recent transfer rumblings.

Clarke has featured 43 times for Shamrock to date, scoring three goals in the process, and his versatility marks him out as one to watch if he does complete a move to St Mary’s in the coming days.

The youngster has been capped four times for the Republic of Ireland’s under-19s and scored three goals in three matches for his country’s under-17 side.

Southampton are currently looking for a new manager following the departure of Claude Puel and given the importance of the summer transfer window they will not want the position to be vacant for long.

According to a recent report from the Irish Sun, both Southampton and Sheffield United sent scouts to watch Clarke in action for his current club, with the Saints’ director of scouting and recruitment, Ross Wilson, particularly impressed by what he saw.

It seems it was enough for the Southampton board to sanction a £1million bid for the player but there is no confirmation as to Shamrock’s response thus far.
