Southampton are reportedly keen to land Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson and Swansea City midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson in action
According to Sky Sports, Southampton believe they can land both Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson and Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson – if they are both in the Championship this summer.
The Saints have blown hot and cold under Claude Puel this season, and should be in the market for new signings this summer, especially if linked-away Virgil van Dijk and Dusan Tadic both leave the club at the end of the season.
A new centre back is needed whether Van Dijk leaves or not, giving that Jose Fonte moved on to West Ham in January, whilst Puel may look for another playmaker despite paying big money for Sofiane Boufal last summer.
Sky Sports now report that Southampton are keen to land Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson and Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson – and believe they’ll be able to sign both players if they remain in the Championship.
Swansea are currently sat in the Premier League relegation zone, whilst Leeds have dropped out of the Championship play-off places after a 1-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday afternoon.
Southampton allegedly now think they they can move for both players if they are Championship players this summer, with the lure of Premier League football key to their pursuit of both players.
Pontus Jansson of Leeds United celebrates after the game
Defender Jansson, 26, has become a Leeds fan favourite since joining the club on loan from Torino last summer, with his superb displays and infectious passion triggering major plaudits and a permanent deal from the Whites.
Whilst Leeds have agreed to sign Jansson permanently, a big offer from Southampton could be appealing to the Whites, with Premier League interest inevitable should they miss out on promotion.
Meanwhile, playmaker Sigurdsson has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top attacking midfielders since leaving Spurs for Swansea in 2014, and he has notched eight goals and 11 assists for the struggling Swansea this term.
The 27-year-old surely won’t be keen on playing in the Championship, but Southampton would have to pay big money to land both him and Jansson; moves which could be funded by selling star defender Van Dijk this summer.
