Southampton want to sign Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez after a prolific season in the second tier of Spanish football with Almeria, according to Calciomercato.
While Danny Ings has played the best football of his career in 2019/20, Ralph Hasenhuttl will be fully aware that The Saints need to ease the goalscoring burden on the former Liverpool frontman.
After all, no one else in the Saints squad has scored more than five Premier League goals this season with Che Adams, Shane Long and Michael Obafemi netting a grand total of six between them.
But whether Nunez is the man to solve the problem is anyone’s guess.
The once-capped Uruguay international has hit the net an impressive 15 times this season – but his stellar form has come in Spain’s second tier, rather than against Real Madrid, Barcelona and co in the top flight.
Nunez’s match-winning displays have not gone unnoticed, however, with a nouveau-riche Almeria side closing in on promotion back to La Liga.

Calciomercato reports that Southampton are battling Napoli and Roma for the signature of 21-year-old Nunez, who might just have been identified as a replacement for Arkadiusz Milik or Edin Dzeko at one of Italy’s biggest clubs.
Interestingly, the report adds that Almeria will not stand in Nunez’s way if he wants to leave after just one year on Spanish soil – though an unproven youngster won’t come cheap at £18m.
