Southampton and West Ham United are reportedly the two clubs currently leading the charge to sign Alfie Mawson this summer.
Despite having a relegation added to his CV this past season, Mawson’s stock appears to be extremely high right now after another impressive year for him personally, as he often proved to be one of the few shining lights in a Swans side that had little to smile about during the campaign.
While the club may have gone down, it appears that Mawson may well be given the chance to continue to ply his trade at the highest level, with The Sun on Sunday listing three sides keen on bagging his signature.
It is certainly little surprise that West Ham have their eye on Mawson. The Hammers may have finished 13th in the table, but no team in the league boasted a worse defensive record than David Moyes’ side. Swansea conceded 12 fewer goals than the Irons.
Southampton conceded the same number of goals as Swansea, but with Virgil van Dijk leaving in January, the Saints certainly need a leader in their back four with the likes of Maya Yoshida, Wesley Hoedt and Jack Stephens all having question marks over their form at various times.
Mawson is currently facing up to a season in the Championship, but he would undoubtedly be a very good addition for both Southampton and West Ham, and it now appears that both seem to be in a fantastic position to potentially get a move across the line.
