Report: Southampton and Tottenham hold strong interest in 20-year-old Italian prodigy

Both Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton want one of Italy’s most promising youngsters, according to reports.

Reports emanating from Italy today suggest that Spurs and Southampton are closely monitoring Sassuolo midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, with a view to making a €10 million (£8.6 million) bid for the 20-year-old Italian, according to Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport.

Both Tottenham and the Saints are renowned for their preference in bringing talented young players into the club, and Pellegrini would certainly fit that criteria.

He is highly regarded in his homeland, and has been capped five times by the Italy under-21 side.

The report from Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Chelsea and Manchester City were the first two English sides to hold an interest in the youngster, and that Sassuolo still remain keen to keep hold of one of their prized assets.

Pellegrini moved to the club from Roma in 2015, and has gone on to make 40 appearances for the Serie A outfit.

And the 20-year-old has particularly impressed so far this term, scoring three goals and providing three assists in 15 league appearances for his club.

He is an accomplished central midfielder, but can also play in a more deep-lying role.

Southampton and Tottenham are both very well covered in the central midfield area at the moment, so if either club were to move for Pellegrini, it would surely be a signing made with one eye on the future.
