According to the Manchester Evening News, Rangers and West Ham United are ‘frontrunners’ to sign ex-Manchester United talent Dion McGhee.

The Daily Star first reported the interest in McGhee last month, claiming that Rangers, West Ham, Derby County and Watford were all keen.

Their chances of signing him didn’t look so great earlier this month, as the Daily Mail claimed that McGhee was likely to head to Portugal.

There is now renewed hope for Rangers and West Ham, as sources close to McGhee have told the MEN that the Gers and the Hammers are ‘frontrunners’ alongside AZ Alkmaar.

West Ham are particularly keen to secure a deal, but the youngster has yet to make a final decision on next destination.

The 19-year-old has decided to leave Manchester United after 13 years at the club, feeling that he wouldn’t get enough playing time.

With five goals and two assists in 31 Under-18 Premier League games for United, McGhee has shown his quality and now wants to play senior football.

Primarily an attacking midfielder, McGhee may be a better fit at West Ham right now, as Rangers have a host of technical midfielders at Steven Gerrard’s disposal.

Joining ex-United boss David Moyes could now be a possibility, with McGhee finding himself a wanted man having become a free agent in June.
