Report: Son Heung-min unlikely to start Spurs’ clash with Liverpool

Son Heung-min is reportedly set to return to Tottenham Hotspur today, but will seemingly not be rushed back into Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

According to a report from the London Evening Standard, Son Heung-min is expected to return to Tottenham today but it is unlikely that he will go into the starting lineup for their clash with Liverpool this weekend.

Son was South Korea’s talisman as they won this summer’s Asian Games and followed that up by featuring in the country’s friendlies with Costa Rica and Chile during this international break.

The London Evening Standard reports that he is now set to finally return to Tottenham on Wednesday and will be assessed by the club having played eight games in less than a month for his country.

The Evening Standard adds that it is expected that Son will not find himself in the Spurs starting lineup for their home clash with Liverpool this weekend as Pochettino’s men look to bounce back from their defeat to Watford before the break.

It is not surprising that Spurs will probably not rush Son back. He played 53 games in all competitions for Tottenham last term, then played every minute of South Korea’s World Cup campaign, and went to the USA with Spurs for their pre-season tour before this latest run of internationals.

It is a remarkable show of endurance, but will now put plenty of pressure on Spurs to monitor his workload very closely in the coming weeks and months.

It will be a boost for Tottenham to have Son back in the ranks. The forward was superb last season and scored in the 4-1 win over the Reds at Wembley back in October.

Spurs have done well without the 26-year-old – Lucas Moura has been a revelation at the start of this campaign – but having him back available will be a huge plus if he can rediscover his form from last season.
