Mauricio Pochettino suggested that he would leave Tottenham Hotspur if they won the Champions League final.
Pochettino stated in the build up to the Champions League final that he would consider leaving Tottenham, if they won European football’s biggest prize.
Tottenham’s players took his comments at face value, and it is reported that some of the squad really were braced for his exit.
Spurs ultimately lost the Champions League final, but if Pochettino had left Spurs this summer it would have been a huge shock, even despite his threats.
Pochettino has decided to stick around as expected, but the pressure is building on the Argentine boss.
Spurs have been in awful form for the entirety of 2019 in the Premier League, and their run in the Champions League last season served as a distraction from what was happening domestically.
Unfortunately the Premier League is currently Tottenham’s sole focus, and they have made a very unimpressive start to the new campaign.
Spurs struggled past Aston Villa on opening day, claimed a credible point against Manchester City despite an off colour display, and then were beaten by Newcastle United.
Many expected Tottenham to be the team to push Manchester City and Liverpool hardest in the race for the Premier League title.
However, if Pochettino’s side are to even finish in the top four they are going to need to perform much better now.
And, with Arsenal up next for Spurs, another defeat could leave serious questions being asked of Pochettino all of a sudden.
