According to The Athletic, some inside Tottenham Hotspur believe Ryan Sessegnon should be challenging Sergio Reguilon next season.

It’s claimed that ‘there is a feeling’ at Tottenham that Sessegnon should be a left back moving forward, battling with Reguilon for playing time next season.

The problem is that Sessegnon wants to play regular first-team football after featuring prominently on loan at Hoffenheim this season.

11 league starts, six substitute appearances, two goals and two assists; Sessegnon’s spell in Germany has been going fairly well this term.

This summer, Sessegnon returns to Tottenham, and they will need to make a decision on whether to bed him back into the squad or send him on loan again.

There has often been a debate on Sessegnon’s best position; left back, left wing back, left winger? The 20-year-old has featured in each of those roles in his young career.

Yet Reguilon and Son Heung-min seem pretty secure down Tottenham’s left flank. Getting into the side won’t be easy for Sessegnon, and Jose Mourinho being in charge wouldn’t help.

The under-pressure Spurs boss may not like that Sessegnon isn’t particularly firm defensively in comparison to his exciting attacking play, and he doesn’t really play with wing backs.

Add in that Ben Davies is still at the club and under contract until 2024, and a future at left back won’t be easy, with Spurs facing plenty of questions over the former Fulham man.
