Manchester United are ramping up their interest in Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a deal for Newcaslte United midfielder Sean Longstaff tied up within days.

The Red Devils have signed two British talents in Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but Longstaff has been a key player on their wishlist for more than a month now.

Having earned comparisons to fellow Geordie and current United coach Michael Carrick, Longstaff is wanted at Old Trafford after a fine spell in 2019, in which he became an important part of the Newcastle midfield.

He’s already wanted though, and Solskjaer allegedly wants him signed up by July 8th, in order to take him on United’s pre-season tour to Australia and the Far East.

That gives United just seven days to meet Solskjaer’s request, and he as allegedly told Ed Woodward to meet Newcastle’s £20million plus add-ons asking price for the 21-year-old midfielder.

A week ago today, Newcastle served up bad news for fans as Rafael Benitez’s exit was confirmed, so can they really afford to sell Longstaff so soon after that?

Sean Longstaff of Newcastle looks on during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Burnley FC at St. James Park on February 26, 2019 in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

The feeling amongst the St James’ Park faithful is far from positive right now, and selling a top homegrown talent like Longstaff within a fortnight of Benitez’s exit would only serve to make things worse.

Yes, £20million-plus would be a great price for a player with just eight Premier League appearances to his name, but Newcastle have struggled to bring through youth players in recent years.

A homegrown player like Longstaff is the sort of figure Newcastle fans want to get behind with Benitez gone, and selling him to United will only worsen the mood with furious Magpies supporters.
