Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is ready to start Jed Steer on opening day, according to the Daily Mail.

Villa are looking to complete the signing of a goalkeeper, with Arsenal’s Emi Martinez firmly in their sights.

However, if the claret and blues are unable to get a deal over the line, then Villa will opt to start Steer over his other options.

Villa have decided that Orjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic are surplus to requirements, while Tom Heaton remains sidelined with injury.

The news that Steer could feature for Villa could come as a surprise, given his lack of football last term.

Steer picked up an injury midway through the campaign, and has not been seen in a Villa shirt since November 2019 as a result.

Nyland played fairly regular for Villa after Heaton suffered a knee problem last season, but it seems that he has failed to convince Smith to stick by him for another campaign.

Villa’s first Premier League game of the season is set to come against Sheffield United on Monday 21st.
