Football London’s Alasdair Gold reports that a new deal for Oliver Skipp is close to completion. Skipp has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season under Antonio Conte at Spurs – and the midfielder is in line for a pay rise.
Skipp, 21, has missed the last eight league games with a groin injury that has since become infected. But the England Under-21 star’s importance to Tottenham is underlined by the form of the side with and without him.
In the six Premier League games he has started under the Italian gaffer – Spurs have kept five clean sheets, conceding only twice, both against Leicester. They have picked up 16 points from a possible 18.
In the eight games Skipp has missed through the groin infection, Spurs have lost four times – conceding 11 goals, keeping only three clean sheets. That form, then, is set to see Skipp earn a new contract – with a pay rise likely.
New Skipp deal: Tottenham contract well deserved for midfielder
Currently, Skipp is on a contract until the summer of 2024 that is expected to be well below what his current first-team involvement suggests. So, he is more than deserving of a new deal – and it protects Spurs assets, too.
If a bigger club do become interested in the defensive midfielder, then at least Spurs will be in a much better position to convince Skipp to remain. He is crucial to a Spurs – a player Conte said plays with “great passion”.
