Manchester United are reportedly interested in Aston Villa sensation John McGinn, and Sir Alex Ferguson is backing a bid.
According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United may be tempted to try and agree a deal with Aston Villa for John McGinn with Sir Alex Ferguson pushing the club to sign the Scotland international.
McGinn has proved to be a revelation since arriving in England last summer. He was exceptional in Villa’s midfield as they sealed promotion to the Premier League – it was his goal that ultimately saw Dean Smith’s men across the line in the play-off final – and looks to be in brilliant form in pre-season.
The transfer deadline is rapidly approaching, but it appears that Villa may still face a fight to keep hold of the 24-year-old – if Ferguson gets his way.
The Sun reports that Sir Alex – who is good friends with McGinn’s grandfather – is now pressing United to bring the combative midfielder to Old Trafford this summer, and his approval may have an impact as United weigh up whether to follow up on their interest in the £50 million-rated star.
Of course, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have his own view of McGinn’s situation. But it is not surprising that Ferguson wants United to make a move for the former Hibernian man.
He is tenacious. But he also has so much quality when he is on the ball. His volley against Sheffield Wednesday last season was comparable to Paul Scholes’ famous strike on the same ground when Ferguson was in the opposition dugout, and his solo goal against Charlton this weekend was another piece of outstanding brilliance.
United may have their reservations about paying £50 million this summer. But based on how quickly he has adapted to life at Villa Park, it would be no surprise if he was worth a lot more in the very near future.
