According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Schalke are pursuing a summer deal for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic – and Tottenham Hotspur must be looking on.

Real are set for changes this summer having seen manager Zinedine Zidane resign last week, and some fringe players may be looking to move on in order to play first-team football next season.

Dani Ceballas and Gareth Bale may be two players looking to move on this summer, and reports now suggest that Croatian star Mateo Kovacic could also be moved on.

Marca claim that German side Schalke want to land Kovacic this summer, and it’s claimed that he is growing tired of not playing and may look to leave as confusion surrounds the club’s managerial situation.

Schalke need midfield reinforcements having lost Leon Goretzka and Max Meyer at the end of their contracts, but news of a real chance of Kovacic moving on should spark Tottenham into life.

The Telegraph recently reported that Kovacic was a top midfield target for Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, with the Croatian being eyed as a potential replacement for Mousa Dembele.

If Schalke have a legitimate shot at signing Kovacic, then Spurs must move. Both teams will be in next season’s Champions League, but Tottenham would surely be more appealing if they went head to head for Kovacic’s signature.

As one of the top Premier League teams, Tottenham will be appealing to many players, whilst his ability to carry the ball through midfield would make him an ideal successor to Dembele.

Some felt that Tottenham wouldn’t be able to tempt Real into a deal for Kovacic, but if Schalke have real hopes, then Spurs would surely have a chance too – and would give fans an exciting signing they are looking for heading into the new stadium.
