Andy Rhodes is quitting Sheffield Wednesday to become Oldham Athletic’s new assistant manager, according to the Sun’s Alan Nixon (liveblog entry 12:58).
Rhodes was appointed Owls goalkeeper coach in January 2010, and is extremely well-regarded at Hillsborough.
The 53-year-old counts England youth internationals Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith among those whose careers he has helped to develop in that time, while experienced trio Keiren Westwood, Chris Kirkland and Nicky Weaver have each been forthcoming with their praise of Rhodes – whose son Jordan plays for Wednesday as a striker.
However, the chance to return to Oldham – where he played and coached – and reunite with former teammate Frankie Bunn, the new Latics boss, looks to have proved too tough to turn down.
News of Rhodes’ potential departure comes hot off the heels of reports of interest in Sheffield Wednesday trio Fernando Forestieri (Stoke City), Barry Bannan (Middlesbrough and Birmingham City) and Sean Clare (various).
