Sheffield Wednesday are planning to agree a new contract with Liam Palmer with the 27-year-old currently set to be a free agent at the end of the season, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (3/3; page 61).

Barring a season-long loan spell at Tranmere Rovers, Palmer has spent his entire career at Hillsborough, making well over 200 appearances for the Owls in all competitions.

He has played 28 times for Wednesday this season, and has started all six of the games that Steve Bruce has overseen since he took over at the start of February.

The Sun on Sunday (3/3; page 61) reports that Palmer is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, but Bruce plans to reward the utility man with fresh terms to stop him leaving on a free in the summer.

Bruce has made a positive start to life with Wednesday. His side go into the Steel City derby on Monday having won three and drawn three under the former Sheffield United boss, and there is no question that his popularity will soar if he delivers a fourth win in their next game.

Palmer faces a tough task however, with the Blades boasting one of the most ruthless attacks in the division, with Chris Wilder’s system meaning that almost every player in the side looks to ask questions of the opposition in the final third.
