Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly battling Aston Villa, Barnsley, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Derby, Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers for Chester defender Sam Hughes.

According to the Daily Mail, Sheffield Wednesday have joined the race to sign Chester defender Sam Hughes this summer.
The Owls have secured their play-off place with a superb run of six wins in a row, and whilst it isn’t yet known who they will face in the battle for promotion, Carlos Carvalhal’s men are back in the mix for a Premier League place after last season’s final defeat to Hull City.
Whether Wednesday win promotion or not, the Owls will be looking for reinforcements during this summer’s transfer window, and another defender appears to be on Carvalhal’s wish list.
Carvalhal does have Tom Lees, Glenn Loovens and Vincent Sasso at his disposal, whilst Sam Hutchinson can also fill in at centre back if required – but a non-league ace is now on Wednesday’s radar.

The Daily Mail report that Wednesday are in the race to sign Chester starlet Sam Hughes, and will fight Aston Villa, Barnsley, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Derby, Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers for his signature.
Hughes, 20, has come up through the ranks with Chester, and his superb performances have seen Championship and even Premier League clubs sit up and take notice of a player who could be the latest non-league gem.
Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy
The likes of Chris Smalling, Michail Antonio, Charlie Austin and Jamie Vardy have risen from non-league football to England international duty in recent years, and their success means clubs are looking further down the pyramid for talent.
Hughes, a centre back who can also play at right back, looks set to move on this summer, and whilst there is strong competition for his services, Wednesday will be hoping to beat their rivals to the young defender.
